Research and reference

In each of my specialist areas, I shall suggest some books as introductions to the subject. Also, please find here a few general books that I feel give a good background to the principles of holistic medicine. If you would like further references, please contact me.

Please note – if you are in any doubt as to the health of your animal, consult your local vet for a diagnosis and to discuss treatment options. Promptly.

  Acupuncture Research

There is a lot of research into Acupuncture. All but the most hard bitten of skeptics agree that acupuncture can be a useful modality in human medicine, and therefore, by extension, veterinary medicine.

Papers on VETERINARY acupuncture are not that numerous. Here are a few I’ve found on Pubmed. Please let me know if you have any more. Thanks.
48 Veterinary Acupuncture Review Papers from the last 10 years – from Pubmed

Only vets can perform acupuncture on animals, but there are a few books that are essential to vets, and useful to owners who’d like to know a little more about this fascinating subject.

Veterinary Acupuncture: Ancient Art to Modern Medicine

Veterinary Acupuncture: Ancient Art to Modern Medicine by Allen M. Schoen DVM MS

The definitive vet acupuncture reference text. Probably too heavy for most non-medical people, but manna from heaven for those studying acupuncture and TCM in the veterinary field.

Essentials of Western Veterinary Acupuncture
by Samantha Lindley and Mike Cummings

Where Schoen, in the book above, is discussing acupuncture from a Traditional Chinese Medicine perspective, Sam Lindley and Mike Cummings come at things more from a ‘Western’ medico-scientific bent. Sounds scary, but if you like ‘facts’ more than the more difficult to grasp concepts of TCM, this is the book for you.
